The course enlightens students with the many subjects that evolve around gender, society and space in the cultural contexts in Taiwan and other countries. The course represents a feminist enquiry, through reading current articles on feminist geography. Topics include women’s status, ethnicity, work, living arrangements, rural-urban migration, international migration, etc.

The course hopes to stimulate students to carry out research on gender in future.

“In this class students are expected to participate and express their views, and I encourage a diversity of opinions and ideas. This is part of the learning process. We will be discussing topics that will probably be controversial and will, I hope, generate a lively give-and-take among students and professor. I encourage you to approach the course and the readings with a readiness to learn about the current controversies related to gender studies, and to be willing to discuss your own perspectives on the topics we'll be covering in class and in the readings. Opposing perspectives will be treated with respect by all.” (Dr. Ellen Hansen, Gender, Place and Culture)
